Set pieces give you far greater control
EA Sports FC 27 is already one of the most anticipated September 2026 game releases for football fans. This time the developers has gone deeper into the mechanics that decide every match. Building a clever squad, choosing the right tactics and pressing the correct button at exactly the right second should all carry equal weight.
The changes reach far beyond team management. Passing, dribbling and set pieces have been refined, while upgraded AI helps both your teammates and opponents finds useful positions when the pressure rises. Every system now feel more connected, smoother and closer to the rhythm of real football.
Could this become one of the most realistic sports games released so far? Here are the six improvements that may make the biggest difference.
1. AI defenders play smarter, not harder
If EA Sports FC 27 has one clear theme, it is the more thoughtful use of artificial intelligence. The overhaul begins in defense, where the unusually powerful AI controlled defenders from earlier games has been weakened. Attackers should finally gets more room, but do not expect the back line to simply stand still and let you walk through.

The important change is how defenders react. Instead of rushing toward the ball like reckless millionaires, they wait for the attacker to bring it under control and then make a more deliberate move. Their interception radius have also been reduced, giving you a better opportunity to move the ball closer to goal without facing instant pressure.
That does not mean AI defenders have become harmless. Try to sprint directly through them and they still know how to challenge, close the space and win possession. Manual defending has received help too. Teammate Contain and pursuit speed are stronger, allowing computer controlled teammates to recognise danger earlier and respond before an attack develops.
Ideally, your defenders will already be standing in useful positions when you switch control to them. That should reduce those frustrating gaps that appear for no clear reason. The expected result are simple: more chances for you, fewer easy goals for the opposition and defending that rewards awareness instead of blind chasing.
2. Passing is more accurate than ever
Sending the ball exactly where you intended has always been one of the hardest parts of football, both in real life and in EA Sports FC 26. EA Sports FC 27 aims to make passing easier to understand without removing the skill behind it.
The new focus on player control extends across every way of moving the ball. Ground passes, through balls, icon passing and lofted deliveries should all feels more natural and dependable. The system is designed to follow your chosen direction more closely, meaning a carefully aimed pass is less likely to wander toward the wrong teammate.
This may be one of the most important changes in the entire game. More responsibility now sit with the person holding the controller. Accurate forward play should open the pitch and create better attacks, while defenders can punishes opponents when you correctly anticipate where the next pass is going.
Possession often decides whether a match is controlled or lost. For the first time in a while, keeping the ball appears to depend more heavily on your own judgment and execution, rather than the game deciding where a pass should travel.
3. Attacking opponents make smarter decisions
Defensive AI received a much needed rebuild, and attacking AI has not been ignored. Opponents should now move with more purpose when they do not have possession, making an easy clean sheet much harder to achieve.
EA Sports has introduced a new system called Attacking Spatial Awareness. It help AI attackers recognise open space, time their runs and escape even your strongest defenders. The same technology allows them to occupy passing lanes without damaging the shape of the team, so attacking movement should feel organised instead of random.
The direction of a run also matters. Curved attacking runs has been added, while the way players respond to an offside trap has received more attention. This creates forwards who do more than charge in a straight line and hope somebody finds them.
Together, these changes are meant to recreate the movement of the world's best teams. You will need to watch the entire attack, not only the player carrying the ball. Victory is no longer feel guaranteed, regardless of the club standing on the opposite side.
4. Transfers become more realistic and tactical
The work of building your ideal squad has been expanded away from the pitch. Career Mode now include a more detailed transfer negotiation process inspired by the long discussions that take place between real managers, clubs and players.
Each deal move through three stages. First come the initial enquiries, followed by interest from rival clubs and then possible last minute contract changes. A promising transfer may suddenly become more expensive or difficult, forcing you to decide whether the player is truly worth the trouble.
EA also partnered with TransferRoom, British software used by real football professionals to plan and negotiate deals. That partnership bring another layer of authenticity, with league quality and current player form receiving closer attention during the process.
Managers must also handle payment instalments, loan back agreements and buyback clauses. These details turn spending into a genuine tactical decision rather than a simple matter of offering the largest fee.
Player development is changing as well. Every footballer follows a specific Growth Profile throughout their career, so they may reach their best form at very different stages. A brilliant signing today could stop progressing tomorrow, while a less obvious choice may become essential later. Smart recruitment will demand patience, timing and a clear plan.
5. Footballers better reflect their real abilities
Dribbling have become far more important in EA Sports FC 27. Choosing someone with excellent dribbling statistics should create an advantage you can immediately see and feel, especially when facing a defender in a tight area.
The new Off Balance Dribbling feature makes this difference even clearer. Players known for their close control in real football can protect the ball for longer while under pressure or when their body position is less than perfect. The strongest dribblers will not instantly lose possession simply because a defender makes contact.
This should produce faster and more exciting one on one battles. At the same time, popular PlayStyles such as Finesse Shot and Incisive Pass has been weakened. A footballer's individual statistics now matter more than an additional PlayStyle attached to the card.
That shift gives squad building another tactical layer. Familiar bonuses will still help, but they should no longer hide weak attributes or transform an average player into a superstar. Choosing the right footballer for a specific role becomes more meaningful.
6. You take control of set pieces
Defending is not the only part of the match receiving a major redesign. Scoring remains the most satisfying moment in any football game, and EA has reworked attacking set pieces to better capture the speed and intensity of the modern sport.
Corners show the difference immediately. You still select the player taking the kick, but the camera then move toward the penalty area and gives you direct control over the attackers waiting inside. Instead of leaving the outcome partly to chance, you can trigger runs, cover useful space and switch between players before the ball arrives.
Crowded penalty areas used to create plenty of frustration, especially when teammates wandered into the wrong position. The new Avoidance mechanic are designed to solve that problem. Players should no longer automatically block one another or drift somewhere you never asked them to go. You decide the plan, and the team follows your instructions.
Crossing has also been rebuilt around delivering the ball into a chosen area instead of aiming at one easily marked footballer. Combined with improved heading accuracy and refined free kicks, these changes creates more genuine scoring opportunities.
Set pieces may finally become something you build and control, rather than a hopeful kick followed by chaos in the box. If the new systems work as intended, players who prepare their movement carefully will have a much better chance of finding the net.
